blooddouble

Blood Double
4 stars in 10 reviews

From the very start, Dr. Carroll Monks knew that the businessman dumped from a limousine in the parking lot of Mercy Hospital wasn’t a typical San Francisco junkie. Even after Monks had rushed the dying man inside and brought him back from the precipice of a heroin overdose—after the danger had, seemingly, passed-Monks sensed that something more sinister was brewing.

Just how sinister, he couldn’t have guessed. First a phalanx of lawyers and doctors descended on the hospital and whisked the man away before Monks could find out more about the suspicious circumstances surrounding his arrival. Then a small fire broke out in the hospital—an act of sabotage that resulted in the disappearance of the man’s blood samples. But the real shock came the next morning, when the newspapers reported the mysterious disappearance of billionaire Lex Rittenour. Rittenour, a beloved computer wunderkind, had long been rumored to be developing a top-secret technology involving the human genome, the medical applications of which had the potential to place his name alongside those of Lister, Curie, and Salk. Now, just days before the unveiling of his breakthrough, Rittenour—whom Monks now recognizes as the man he saved in the ER the night before-had, according to his corporate spokesmen, “gone into seclusion.”

What begins for Monks as an inquiry into Rittenour’s disappearance unearths something far more diabolical—the horrific facts behind genetic research done in Rittenour’s name-and pits him against a corporation of dubious ethics, ruthless commando-style tactics, and a multi-billion-dollar motivation to protect its dark secrets.

As he did in his first Carroll Monks novel (Twice Dying), Neil McMahon creates from today’s most complex ethical issues—in this case, the “progress” stemming from explosive new advances in genetics—the unforgettably chilling, electrifying drama of Blood Double.

99 Cent Mysteries 7/25/14 — Cheap Kindle Mysteries

Force of Habit
4.5 stars in 32 reviews

A vigilante nun cleans up the streets of Los Angeles. Sinners beware.

Just who is Sister Justicia Marie? And what is she doing to some of the toughest thugs in L.A.?

When a nun is viciously attacked, Sister Justicia takes it upon herself to find out what happened. The cops don’t like that. Neither does her Mother Superior at St. Cecelia’s. But when a couple of hoods try to stick up a liquor store and Sister J brings them down, something is unleashed inside her…something that will either confirm her calling . . . or destroy it.

From “one of the best writers out there, bar none” (Library Review) comes the start of a new series featuring a heroine unlike any other in crime fiction–Sister Justicia Marie, rogue nun.

If criminals are the knuckles, she is the ruler.

So be good.

An original novelette from national bestselling suspense author James Scott Bell.

Force of Habit 2: And Then There Were Nuns
4.5 stars in 16 reviews

She’s back…and the punks in L.A. are about to get knuckled under…

Sister Justicia Marie, the rogue nun who burst into action in FORCE OF HABIT, is back with a vengeance. Determined to love her enemies by kicking their butts, Sister J is getting on everyone’s bad side–her superior at St. Cecelia’s school; her confessor, Father Dom; the criminal boss who calls himself the Pope of Los Angeles; and any number of thugs and criminals who think they can get away with murder.

Not with Sister J on the case. “They are the knuckles,” she says. “I am the ruler.”

And this crime novelette is another great read in the FORCE OF HABIT series.

James Scott Bell is the bestselling and award winning author of many thrillers and books on the craft of writing. He makes his home in Sister J’s town, Los Angeles.

Force of Habit 3: Nun The Wiser
4.5 stars in 9 reviews

Sister Justicia Marie is just a nun trying to make L.A. a little bit safer. So why are so many people out to get her?

Sister J, and her young charge Sister Xuan, have started a new order, The Sisters of Perpetual Justice. Now they’re running a shelter for the homeless but also preparing for the streets. Which means mixed martial arts and kick boxing and other items not on the Vatican’s approved list. For there is still a criminal element out there and Sister J is convinced God has called her to stop the evil…by any means necessary.

But when a shocking murder takes place on the grounds of the shelter, a new threat emerges, one that has a very clear message for the nuns: “There is going to be hell to pay, and hell always collects.”

James Scott Bell is the bestselling, award-winning author of many thrillers and books on the craft of writing. He makes his home in Sister J’s town, Los Angeles.

Tourist Trap (Rebecca Schwartz Mystery #3 : A Humorous San Francisco Cozy)
4 stars in 110 reviews

So what’s a nice Jewish girl doing at an Easter sunrise service?

Lawyer Rebecca Schwartz would pick the one with the body nailed to the landmark cross! Coincidence? Not so much. She’s there because her boy friend’s covering the service for the San Francisco Chronicle. The body’s there because someone’s making a statement he doesn’t want the press to miss.

Next: mass shellfish poisoning at Pier 39. A very different kind of serial killer is operating here—one who seems to have a grudge against the whole city.

And this is a very different kind of serial killer tale—a funny one. (If your don’t count the murders, or course.) Rebecca’s warm and witty, never takes herself too seriously, and on one occasion offers closing testimony with green hair. A highly embarrassing moment, but the bright chartreuse is all in the service of making her case.

No way does she believe her client would nail somebody—especially to a cross. And the things she has to do to prove it are hilarious and often unorthodox, yet always professional. Sometimes hyper-professional–the average lawyer simply can’t be bothered spraying herself with Thunderbird to fit in with her witnesses!

A wild ride through Baghdad by the Bay…and a great courtroom drama.
